The Medina County Arts Council awarded $3,571.91 in grants for artS-related projects in Medina County schools/organizations

Grants are awarded for projects in music, visual art, theater, dance, and language arts, but are not limited to those areas.

2023/2024 Educator/Teacher Grant Recipients

2023/2024 Educator grants awarded from the Nancy Sprowls Memorial Fund

Erin  Kraly - Huntington Elementary School (Brunswick)
Project Title:  Wild About the Arts
Amount:  $421.76
Project Description: To help purchase art lesson materials to create a fully immersive Wild About the Arts event that incorporates over 1500 pieces of kindergarten to fifth grade student artwork and student musical performances in April. Students will apply the elements and principles of design to create multiple artworks that are jungle or safari inspired with lesson inspiration from Henri Rousseau alongside additional artists.

Jeannette Timko - Kidder Elementary School (Brunswick)
Project Title:  Kidder Theater Club Start-Up
Amount:  $321.60
Project Description: These funds will be used for starting up a drama/theater program at Kidder Elementary. Fourth and fifth  grade students will have the opportunity to join a new club at Kidder, Drama Club. This club will build confidence, develop creativity, encourage teamwork and collaboration as students perform and produce a production. It will also enhance individual acting (role and character, voice, time, situation, time period and mood of the production) and all technical areas of scenery, lighting, costuming and sound.

Danielle Cuculic - Medina High School
Project Title:  Adventures in Plein Air Drawing
Amount:  $239.85
Project Description: To purchase additional supplies for a Plein Air Drawing Unit and Field Trip to Hinckley Lake. I would like to buy brush pens to have as a travel medium for students to work with that allows them to quickly layer large areas of color and are easy to transport. This Plein Air Unit will help students develop skills in observational drawing, composition and connect experience to the creation of artwork

Tyler Skidmore - Medina High School
Project Title: Dalcroze Eurhythmics Workshop
Amount:  $350.00
Project Description: We are requesting $350 to bring a skilled clinician/Dalcroze Eurhythmics expert to conduct an interactive workshop in our high school choir and music theory classes. This transformative project will take place during the fall semester of 2023 and will target our students' musical development and holistic growth. Through Dalcroze Eurhythmics exercises, our students will develop a heightened sense of rhythmic precision. This skill is essential for any musician and will greatly benefit our choir members and music theory students alike

2023/2024 Educator grants awarded from general funding

Cassie Jirous - Lodi Family Center
Project Title: Media Lab/Teaching Artistic Behaviors (TAB)
Amount:  $800.00
Project Description: The purpose of this grant is to help provide supplies for a media lab that will allow students to explore various materials so they can find what inspires them. The goal is to set up an entire classroom solely focused on art utilizing the TAB philosophy, which states that the child is the artist and the classroom is the artist's studio. This program will become a permanent program offered through the Kids Maker Space. Last year we served 76 kids during our Summer STEAM Camps. This coming year, we are planning on serving 100 kids during the 2024 Summer STEAM Camps.

Amy Muhl - Central Intermediate School (Wadsworth)
Project Title: Adaptive Hand Drums
Amount:  $734.85
Project Description: To enrich the lives of our adaptive student population at Central Intermediate School with hand drums that can be played by students with limited mobility. These can be played solo or together with others as well. Students will be able to play an instrument with pitches using their hands, or mallets, and on their laps or the floor as needed.

Marlene Bossart - Central Intermediate School (Wadsworth)
Project Title:  Adaptive Art Integration
Amount:  $703.85
Project Description: To purchase adaptive art materials for the Art room. The specially designed scissors, crayons and assorted art tools will help me  meet the growing needs of the special education population at my building, now and in the future.

ABOUT EDUCATOR/TEACHER GRANT

    • Funding is intended to aid teachers with providing innovative and substantive projects that might be outside of their principal’s budget, including supplies or fees for services.

    • They are not intended to pay for regular classroom materials, or fund routine assignments.

    • Expenses worthy of the grants might be to fund a guest musician in the classroom, to pay for art supplies for a new or experimental project, or to purchase scripts needed for a special performance.

  • Grant projects must be completed by May 31, 2024, and follow-up reports submitted by June 30, 2024.

  • Grants are awarded for projects in music, visual art, theater, dance, and language arts, but are not limited to those areas.While there is no funding limit on each grant, in the past grants have averaged around $400 each.Total available funds for arts education grants for 2023 was $4,500, and we tried to fund as many projects as possible within this budget.

  • Completed grant applications were to be received by October 1st, 2023 and the board made a decision and selected the recipients during October. Educator Grant funding will be awarded in November 2023.

2023 TEACHER GRANT RECIPIENTS

The Medina County Arts Council Board of Trustees awarded four educators grants January 2023, totaling $1,600 to support arts-related projects for their students.

Here are the teachers and locations awarded:

Kristy Handlin (Cloverleaf Elementary) $400
Young Authors and Illustrators - 200 first grade students will learn different types of writing: narrative, informational, and opinion. They will write their own fictional or informational story and illustrate it.  They will have their very own book to keep and share at the end.

Samantha Quallich (Wadsworth Middle School) $400
Our First Microphone for Recordings - 300 students will record themselves through  the use of technology.  Choir students will use the microphone to record and listen to themselves, and the general music students will record their group STOMP compositions.

 Andrea Risenhoover (Blake Elementary School, Medina) $400
Play and Explore Color-Changing Light Center - 425 students will be able to experiment with light, color mixing, color theory and problem-solving strategies using this portable LED light table.

Theresa Gorbach (Sacred Heart of Jesus School, Wadsworth) $400
Arts Based Enrichment Electives - 230 students will be educated in a variety of arts education.  From learning a new instrument, exposure to ceramics, to theater and vocal instruction, these students will have an exposure to many disciplines to learn to become creative thinkers.

 
 

2022 TEACHER GRANT RECIPIENTS

The total grant funds provided in 2022 total $1,583.37. Here are the teachers, projects, and locations awarded:

Nancy Dake (Lodi Family Center) - $400
To be used for Kids’ Maker Space in their Lodi after school program.

Jennifer Vilimonovic (Hobby Horse) - $300
To be used for updating their equipment for music program.

Lisa Wallen (Wadsworth Middle School) - $400
To be used for a Glow Art project with black lights and fluorescent materials.

Amanda Montana (St. Francis Xavier, Medina) - $125
To be used for Kindness Postcards to be sent out to community/school members.

Sally Lucas (Isham Elementary School, Wadsworth) - $358.37
To be used for Isham’s 100 year celebration cap/lid mural.


2021 TEACHER GRANT RECIPIENTS

Lauren Smith (Medina High School)
Project: Digital Art Portfolio The purchase of photo booths for her students to create portfolios of their own artwork. Project will benefit 500+ students each year

Marlene Bossart (Wadsworth Central Intermediate School)
Project: Stop Motion Animation. To purchase stop motion cameras and non-hardening clay for her 5th and 6th grade students to create animated videos. Project will benefit 325+ students

Kelly Harrison (Brunswick Middle School)
Project: STEAM Do or Dye. Students will design new Brunswick Middle School logo with digital art techniques, learn tie dye patterns, and screen printing T-shirts. Will benefit 315 students including special education units.

Logan Byerly (Brunswick Kidder Elementary)
Project: purchase of 8 ukuleles for grades 1-5 to reinforce their knowledge of musical concepts. Will benefit 318 students.
